Traditional college education is not possible for many of us, especially working people. Online education is a wonderful option for people who do not have access to colleges where they live. Online accounting degree programs becomeĀ  available at more institutions all the time. This kind of education works very well for accounting because so much of the work is done individually. Virtual work groups, teleconferencing and on-campus requirements give opportunities to work on teams and in groups, as well. Online accounting degree programs award associates, bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees, as well as graduate certificates. Online accounting degree programs can prepare you for CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CMA (Certified management accountant) or CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) certification.

When you decide to pursue a degree, and realize that online learning is a good option for you, you need to find the online accounting degree program that fits your career goals the best. There are important questions to consider as you look for the most appropriate program.

What is the focus of the program?

Does it train you to work in a specific industry or work with taxes, for example? Does the program prepare students for certification exams or not? What kind of courses does it offer to support your specific career goals? With online learning, you are not stuck with whatever your local school offers. You have much more control, and can make sure the online accounting degree program you choose will help you meet your goals.

How much does the program cost?

This is one of the most important questions. Fortunately, you can easily compare costs of different online schools and programs. Obviously, a private school will normally cost more than a public one. Look at any financing options available. What kind of scholarship programs does the online accounting degree program offer? Can you make tuition payments, or do they require a lump sum payment at the beginning of the course? Do they offer educational loans?

Is the school accredited?

And who accredits it? Any school that offers an advanced degree in a very short time, based on life experience or something like, is a degree mill. There are online schools that claim to be completely accredited and even list their accreditation, but are actually degree mills. You can get your degree that way, but it is worthless, since employers do not accept such a degree. An online school should be accredited by the same agency or agencies that accredit traditional schools. (Check with the State Department of Education to see if the school is fully and appropriately accredited.)

There are thousands of online accounting degree programs. Before you choose the one you want to get your degree from, conduct a thorough research online. Studies are beginning to show that a good online program is equivalent to a good traditional program. Use the guidelines above to make sure you enroll in a prestigious program that best suits your career goals. Look for posts on the Accounting Career Web site that provide links to such programs.
