If you are thinking of starting your own home business, and you like working with numbers, you might want to consider becoming a Tax Preparer. Tax preparation is a bit threatening for more Americans. There is availability of tax preparation software for home use but most people are still uncomfortable preparing their own taxes. Tax laws change from year to year, and the forms seem endless and daunting to those who are unfamiliar with them. Therefore, a tax preparer is someone who will always be in demand.
You must have some training to become a tax preparer. If you have the time and financial resources, and are happy in an academic environment, you can take the traditional way. This involves enrolling in a 4 year college to work toward a BS degree and CPA certification. But, there are shorter and inexpensive routes that can also lead to becoming a tax preparer. Many tax preparation companies such as H & R Block have their own tax schools with coursework that can be completed in only a few months. An advantage of learning with these respected companies you might also be able to increase your experience working for them after completing the course. It is not a bad idea to have a bit of experience before striking out on your own home based business.
Once you have completed your training, and have some experience in the field, you will be ready to start up your own business. You will need to draw up a business plan first. Start by outlining your first year’s goals, and then move on to the projection for the next five years. Plan how you will budget your time, how long it takes to prepare an average return, and how much work you will be reasonably able to do in one week. Where will you be meeting your clients? Decide how you want to advertise your tax preparation service and find out what your expenses will be. Knowing what to expect takes a lot of the guess work out of your job and lets you enjoy the rewards. You have to learn to sell yourself, because you will need to let people know you are responsible, qualified, and ready to work. If you have already done tax preparation work for another company, you may have established a good reputation. If you have never worked in the field, however, a good reputation is something you will have to earn over time.
In the beginning you must advertise your tax preparation service. There are many places to advertise a tax preparer business successfully. Most communities have local coupon mailers where you can offer coupons toward your service and reach a broad market. There are also local newspapers and websites that people turn to when they need tax services. And, joining your local chamber of commerce could help you network and gain the trust and respect of your community. Advertising costs vary greatly, so take the extra time to do your homework and find the best value.
Unlike many other home-based businesses, the tax preparation business is just for the tax season. During tax season (from February through April) you should be prepared to work extra hours. Your hard work will be nicely rewarded, though, as many tax preparers receive as much as $500 for a single return, particularly for a complex one. You may need to prepare just three to four complex returns per day to be able to bring an impressive income. However, this high weekly income does not continue after tax season, so you need to budget and plan carefully for the whole year in order for your business to succeed. You will have some work at other times of the year, such as estimated quarterly taxes or small business forms that need to be filed, but the greater part of your income will be earned during only a few months of the year.
Being a home-based tax preparer you will still have the opportunity to work with people and provide a much valued service to them. Tax preparation income potential has shown to be excellent over the years, and if you plan carefully, you will be able to enjoy a very good deal of leisure time to do anything you wish during the rest of the year.
